Benne: the talk of the town

For all the rock dwellers, let me introduce you to the place that first crowded the lane, dug up sidewalks and made its mark. From queues spilling into the street to quietly redefining the functioning of a modern South Indian joint, I’m talking about Benne, the coolest cat on 16th Road.

Benne came in quietly but confidently–surrounded by jazzy signage, mega interiors, and menus the size of mini novels, a place that blended modernism and tradition. With a no-seating policy (almost unheard of at the time), a tight, focused menu, and ghee-laced dosas that made people stop and stare, it became iconic.

Suddenly, slot bookings and self-standing breakfasts were a thing. Its food spoke louder than any decor could, and soon, everyone from your cousin to your bestie’s grandma was posting about it.

As Benne’s popularity grew, other restaurants started taking notes. They realised that social media wasn’t just a marketing tool, it was the new word-of-mouth. The glam got dialled down, and story-worthy elements took centre stage, signage that doubled as Instagram quotes, open kitchens that invited you into the drama of generous pouring of ghee on thick dosas, and filter-free food styling.

The allure of Bandra's 16th road

Moreover, everyone wanted to be near Benne to ride its wave, to be the fallback option when customers got tired of waiting in line. And just like that, in a span of a few weeks, 16th Road changed. It became a one-lane feast, offering everything from lip-smacking brekkies to experimental lunch and dinner menus, specialty coffee shops brewing beans with maniacal devotion, and matcha lattes that became the Bandra girl kryptonite.

Bandra and her roads have always puzzled me. I’ve spent years getting lost in them; sometimes for peace, sometimes for festive feels, but mostly for food. Yet one particular road has become the talk of the town: 16th Road.

It’s the kind of road that calls out to every restaurant dreamer aiming to be the next big thing:  It Girl of Bandra, and maybe even all of Mumbai. Much like the monsoons, it’s always flooded with a new eating spot almost every week. By the time you find out about one location, it’s been replaced, repainted, and rebranded.

What stood out was a pattern, micro menus but macro impact! Nobody was trying to do it all. Every new place focused on a few stellar items done right, plated simply and primed for the 'Gram. And the rest of us? We were caught in a loop of FOMO, watching a new “hot spot” pop up every time we blinked; we simply couldn't keep up.

A cultural moment

16th Road wasn’t just a food lane anymore. It was a cultural moment! Content Creators dropped pins, shot reels, and unintentionally made the restaurants blow up overnight. Ironically, the lane itself remained dug up, with parking a nightmare, but no one cared. Some eateries now proudly list “near Benne” in their addresses not only as a location, but also badge of honour. As if to say, “if you loved Benne, you’ll love us. We share the same PIN code.”

Benne didn’t just open its shutters, it opened a chapter. And now, the rest of Bandra is taking notes.

While the suburb has always flirted with food trends and fleeting obsessions, 16th Road feels like a lasting love affair. It’s proof that you don’t need a hundred dishes, dramatic decor, or overdone gimmicks to be memorable. All you need is passion for food, perfect timing, and one iconic item that lives rent-free in everyone’s head (and story highlights).

16th Road is where restaurant dreams aren’t just cooked up. They’re soft-launched with quality social queues which become rivals for concert tickets. They are saved by every foodie, self-titled creator, and casual bruncher who just wants a bite of the next big thing.

If you’re walking down 16th and the smell of ghee or espresso pulls you in, don’t fight it. Let it guide you into a lane that doesn’t just feed your cravings, it keeps you coming back for more.
